Academics
At Hollyglen Elementary, we empower our cubs with a strong foundation for life-long learning.
We do this through an engaging and innovative curriculum, taught by teachers who pride themselves on continuous improvement of their craft. Across all subjects, our teachers are attentive to individual students' academic and social emotional strengths, needs, and choices.
Writer's Workshop
Through our signature Writer's Workshop program, our students become authors.
Our teachers guide students through different writing lessons, then students independently write. After drafting their writing, they partner and share out stories, and continue to refine them over the course of the lesson until they are ready for a class-wide celebration of writing.
During the celebration, our writers have the chance to share their finished book with the class, growing their self-confidence in a supportive environment.
Cognitively Guided Instruction in Math
Cognitively Guided Instruction in math is a way for our staff to differentiate their instruction to best meet their students' needs. This allows teachers to provide challenging tasks to students who are ready. In addition, it also allows teachers to provide support to students through questioning strategies. CGI is based on 30 years of research and has proved to create critical thinkers!
CGI is supported by our Eureka Math2 curriculum, , which provides a cohesive and comprehensive framework for math instruction. Eureka Math2 aligns with the principles of CGI by emphasizing problem-solving, conceptual understanding, and skill development. Together, CGI and Eureka Math2 empower our educators to build on students' natural problem-solving abilities while fostering a deep understanding of mathematical concepts.
English Language Arts
Our English Language Arts curriculum empowers teachers to differentiate instruction and meet the diverse needs of all students.
Teachers utilize leveled readers to both challenge advanced learners and support those needing additional assistance, ensuring instruction is tailored to each student's level.
The curriculum, provided by McGraw-Hill Wonders, is supplemented by foundational skills practice rooted in the science of reading, helping students build strong literacy skills.
Students have the opportunity to dive deeper into Social Studies or Science topics they encounter in Wonders. They research reliable online and book sources, then use their findings to create engaging projects, such as dioramas or online travel brochures, and write informational essays.
This hands-on approach not only enhances students' research and writing skills but also fosters creativity and critical thinking. Both students and teachers are thriving with this enriching and dynamic work!
Academic Supports
Reading Intervention
Hollyglen offers a reading intervention program for students who need more support in the area of reading. Students receive a research-based curriculum at their level either in individual sessions or in a small group. In addition, students are tested at the end of each trimester and either continues in the program or is dismissed based on their progress.
English Language Development
Hollyglen Elementary is also proud to offer ELD classes to students who need further support with language. These classes are taught by credentialed teachers who provide both push-in services and teach their own classes before and after school. Our ELD team uses the English Language Art curriculum Wonders and plans with the classroom teacher to ensure they are teaching the same material. In addition, the students get to create fun research and inquiry projects and learn about different cultures. It is a wonderful programs and students love coming to class!
