General Information and Safety

STUDENT SAFETY

Please discuss with your children the importance of not accepting rides or even talking to strangers. They should be walking to and from school with an adult. Be sure your child knows how to cross streets safely. Also teach your children your home and work telephone numbers where you can be reached in an emergency. If there is a change in a regular schedule, let the teacher and the school office know so your child knows what to do after school. Students must never leave the school during school hours without permission from the office. Students will be released only to those persons listed on the Emergency Information Card. Make sure your child knows where he/she lives (address) and phone number.

TRAFFIC SAFETY

Double parking or parking in a red zone is a traffic violation. It is extremely important that you and your child use the crosswalks when crossing 135th Street - rather than crossing in the middle of the street (jaywalking).

BICYCLES

Students can ride their bicycle to school and use our bike racks on campus. We have two bike rack locations. One is in our Kindergarten area and another one near the library for our first and second grade students. Students who ride their bike to school are required to wear a helmet and walk their bike while on campus.

Pick-Up and Drop-Off Procedures

VALET SERVICE

Each morning, school staff “valets” will be in the parking lot beginning at 8 a.m. to assist you as you drop off your children. Please use the valet line only for drop off from your car. As always, staff members will be keeping the valet line moving to help facilitate a quicker drop off for everyone. At pick up, please walk to the dismissal area or find a legal place to park your car. Your cooperation and cheerfulness in the valet line is appreciated and will ensure your child’s safety. Please remember the red zone is for loading and unloading only, not for parking. It must remain clear for emergency vehicles.

General Procedures for Everyone:

• Drivers should not get out of the car.
• Children should enter, exit car only from the passenger/curbside.
• Have backpacks zipped up and ready to go. Do not place in trunk.
• Before you arrive in drop-off lane, your child should be finished with breakfast foods, have hair combed, coats buttoned and shoes tied, and goodbyes and great day wishes exchanged.
• Remind your child to be watching for your car and ready to go at pick-up time.
• Please help us model safe and polite behavior for our children.

Pick-up Locations by Grade Level:

There is no valet service at pick-up; please use street parking and park your vehicle if you drove to campus. To help prevent traffic congestion, our grade levels are dismissed from different locations:

• TK/K: Kindergarten quad gates (your student’s teacher will let you know which of the three gates each class will use)
• 1st Grade: Hollyglen main entrance
• 2nd Grade: 134th St. Gate, near blacktop

Rainy Day Procedures

To keep our children dry during rainy days, we have the following before and after school plan.

Rainy Day Before School
Kindergarten

• Raincoats with hoods are encouraged as opposed to umbrellas, as a matter of student safety.  
• Children stand under the awning by their classroom until open.

1st and 2nd Grade

• 1st and 2nd grade go directly to their classroom.
• Students will have indoor recess time until 8:30, when class will begin.

Rainy Day Dismissal

If rainy weather is expected, please send your child to school with a raincoat and/or umbrella. In the event of extreme weather, please stay tuned to your email for any emergency messages from the school site. If it is raining heavily at dismissal, we will ask families to walk to the classrooms to pick up students there.

Weekly Newsletter

Throughout the school year a weekly school newsletter will be sent to your email every Thursday evening. Please take a few minutes each week to review the important information on upcoming news and events that the newsletter contains.

School telephones are available in every classroom for emergencies or for school business only.

Cell phone use by students is not permitted at school. Cell phones that are observed by staff members will be taken and returned only to a parent.

Devices such as smart watches are not allowed to be worn during the school day, as they are a significant distraction to our young learners. Devices may be kept in the student’s backpack during the day. The school does not accept liability for lost or stolen items, and any devices brought to school are at the student’s/family’s risk.

Attendance

THE LAW

All students between the ages of 6 and 18 must attend school daily. Parents or guardians are responsible for sending their children to school (E.C. 48200).

Verified excused absences are:  

• Illness
• Quarantine directed by county or city health officials
• Medical, dental or eye care services
• Attending funeral services for the immediate family
• Attending religious services

TARDIES

It is the legal responsibility of the parent/guardian and student to see that the student arrives at school on time.

When a student has been tardy on 5 occasions, the school will send a letter to the child’s parent.

 EXCESSIVE ABSENCES AND TARDIES

When a student has been absent and/or tardy on 10 occasions, school notification will occur. A School Attendance Review Team meeting may occur when students are absent and/or tardy from school more than 10 days and when a clear pattern exists.

TRUANCY

Education Code Section 48260 – Any pupil subject to full time education who is absent from school without valid excuse for three days or tardy for more than 30 minutes during the school day without valid excuse on three occasions in one school year, is a truant and shall be reported to the attendance supervisor or the superintendent of the school district.

Please note: If your child misses school by leaving more than 30 minutes early on more than three occasions during the school year, without a valid excuse, he/she may also be considered a truant.

Truancy can lead to severe consequences, including fines and criminal prosecution.

Students who are truant from school will be referred to the District Attendance Chairperson and a referral to the District Attendance Review Team (DART) and School Attendance & Review Board (SARB) may occur.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE REVIEW TEAM (SART)

When a student has any combination of absences, tardies, leaving early, etc., totaling 12 or more times, a SART meeting may be called. This is a required meeting in which the parent, student and principal will draw up an attendance contract. A violation of the SART contract may result in a referral to the District Attendance Review Team (DART). Further action to the School Attendance Review Board (SARB) may occur if attendance does not improve.

 If your child is absent, please:

1. CALL the school at 310-725-2151 and explain the reason for the absence EACH morning the child is out. You may also send an email to Mrs. Galdamez at sgaldamez@wiseburn.org.
2. Upon return, have your child report directly to class following an absence. If you have not already notified the office, a note must accompany your child stating the reason for the absence and given to the teacher. We are required to verify all absences.
3. If your child has a communicable disease, a serious injury, or for any reason might need to restrict his/her activity, please have him check into the nurse’s office before going to the classroom.

PART DAY ABSENCE

We encourage you to try to schedule your child's doctor and dental appointments outside school hours. If this is not possible and your child needs to be absent for part of the day, please check into the office first. A note from the child’s doctor or dentist is required to excuse the late arrival or early pick-up.

Students will be dismissed only through the office to the parent or to the emergency contacts listed on the registration form. This is for your child's protection as well as ours.

HOME INSTRUCTION FOR EXTENDED ILLNESSES

Students in need of home instruction due to chronic and/or extended illness should contact the school health office with physician referral to arrange for home teaching program when appropriate.

INDEPENDENT STUDY

An Independent Study Contract may be considered when a student will miss 5 days or more of school. Independent Study can be denied if the student is not leaving for reasons recognized in the Education Code. All requests for Independent Study must be made in the school office. The school must have 10 days prior notice so the teachers can prepare lesson plans. The contract is a legal document which is filed in the school office along with the completed work and is required for California State attendance audit. Work must come back to the teacher the day the student returns to school. If the work is not complete, the absences will be recorded as being unexcused.

STUDENTS REMAINING AFTER SCHOOL

If the teacher or office feels it necessary to keep a student after school more than 15 minutes, it is our policy to notify the home.

TAKE YOUR CHILD TO WORK DAY

If your child is going to take part in “Take Your Child to Work Day” and will miss school, you must provide a letter from your place of employment to excuse the absence. Please be aware that by missing school for this purpose, the student is no longer eligible for Perfect Attendance. Schools do not receive funding (ADA) for students who miss school for this purpose.

PERMITS

Parents may apply for permits from other districts so that their child can attend Wiseburn Schools yearly. A student on permit may lose the privilege to attend Aviation Elementary School if the student expectations and parent requirements are not met. The District Superintendent can answer any questions you might have about permits.

OUT OF DISTRICT MOVES

If you are moving, please let us know a day or two in advance. This will allow us to have your child's transfer papers and a copy of the immunization record ready on the day he/she is to leave. If you move out of the Wiseburn District and want to continue attending Aviation Elementary School, a permit must be obtained from the permit office.

Breakfast and Lunch Programs

Both breakfast and lunch are available to all students at no cost to families. Please click the link below for information on menu options.

Our gates will open each morning at 8 a.m. Our 1st and 2nd grade students will be served breakfast from 8-8:20 a.m., and our TK/Kindergarten students will be served breakfast from 8-8:35 a.m. Students who finish eating quickly will have time for supervised play during any remaining time before school begins. 

If your student has any food allergies, please be sure that you include this information in your registration form responses and that you notify your student’s teacher. Thank you!

Dietary Restrictions

Parents should explain this information when filling out their student's health information in SchoolMint. This information is then provided to our health clerk, who shares with our teachers as needed. Parents are always encouraged to contact their teacher and our health office directly with any changes or updates.

Incoming Requirements

Immunizations

All children entering Kindergarten or entering school from out of state must have, at the time of enrollment, written evidence of required immunizations. These include a D.P.T., Polio, Hepatitis B, M.M.R and Varicella. The law requires that your child be excluded from school if he/she does not meet these test requirements.

School Entry Physical

All California school children are required to have a copy of a school entry physical exam in their health record at school. The State form needs to be completed by your child’s medical practitioner and returned to the Health Office before completion of Kindergarten. The form can be obtained from the Health Office. Wiseburn School District does not provide physical exams.

Dental Check-Up

To make sure your child is ready for school, California law, Education Code Section 49452.8, now requires that your child have an oral health assessment (dental check-up) by November 1 in either kindergarten or first grade, whichever is his or her first year in public school. Assessments that have happened within the 12 months before your child enters school also meet this requirement. The law specifies that the assessment must be done by a licensed dentist or other licensed or registered dental health professional.

Medications

California Education Code Section 49423 allows designated school personnel to assist the pupil when required to take medication (prescription or over the counter) during the school day.

In order for the school personnel to assist a pupil with medication, the following legal requirements must be met:

Parent/Guardian must sign a statement requesting that school personnel assist the pupil in taking medication during school hours. The physician must sign a statement detailing the method, amount, and time schedules by which such medication will be taken.

Whether it is prescription or over the counter medication, the medication bottle provided by the parent must have the prescription label, complete with the pupil’s name and doctor’s instruction.

Parent request and physician’s statement must be renewed at least annually; new signed physician and parent statements must be submitted if the medication regimen is changed.

All medications will be kept in the office to insure that no medications are shared amongst students. Parents/guardians may bring medication to the school office and give it to their child at the appropriate time. Hollyglen office staff has the proper form for both parent and physician to complete and return to the Health Office.

Volunteering at Hollyglen

We need volunteers to enhance the quality of all our school programs. If you are interested in becoming a school volunteer or you have a friend or neighbor, perhaps a retiree who would be interested in assisting in the classroom, reading to the children, running off papers, translating or sharing a special vocation, please call Hollyglen School at (310) 725-5400 for information. All volunteers must submit proof of a TB (Mantoux – PPD) test and complete online pesticide training.
