About Our School
Hollyglen Elementary was founded in 1949. It is one of the four elementary schools in the Wiseburn School District in the city of Hawthorne, California.
After almost sixty years of service, the original structure of Hollyglen Elementary was demolished in July of 2007 in order to make way for the district’s newest and most technologically advanced school. The new facilities opened in January of 2009.

Hollyglen is one of 390 exemplary California public elementary schools (re)named a 2012 California Distinguished School! In order to be invited to apply for Distinguished School honors, schools must meet a variety of eligibility criteria including designated federal and state accountability measures based on the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) and the Academic Performance Index (API) requirements. The California Distinguished School Award identifies and honors those schools that have demonstrated educational excellence for all students and progress in narrowing the achievement gap.
The announcement was preceded by an invitation to apply, an acceptance of our application, and a site visit to validate the full implementation of the submitted practices. A team of five educators was lead by a member of the CA State Board of Education to verify our two signature practices of English Language Development (ELD) and Art. The team interviewed teachers, staff, parents, our superintendent, chief financial officer, school board members and community partners in addition to observing every Hollyglen classroom. The team verbally validated our signature practices and also highlighted the tremendous sense of COMMUNITY they felt from all the groups they interviewed working together to support children.
Hollyglen was honored as a Distinguished School at an award ceremony where the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson presented Hollyglen with a 2012 Distinguished School plaque and flag. In addition to being recognized as a CA Distinguished School, Hollyglen was also recognized as one of 117 Title I Academic Achievement Schools for narrowing the achievement gap between all subgroups. Both awards were presented to the school at a ceremony in May, 2012.
We are so proud of the hard work and loving dedication of our teachers, staff, and district leadership together with parents and community partners who create a balanced academic program for the success of all our children at Hollyglen.
